A first grooming appointment starts with a conversation, not a promise of a particular haircut. Your puppy’s coat, grooming experience, comfort, and health all help determine what to request. Here is how to prepare for a mobile visit at your Nassau or Suffolk home.
Start with your puppy’s details
Tell our team your puppy’s age, approximate weight, breed or mix, and what the coat is like today. Mention any experience with brushing, baths, dryers, or having paws touched. If an activity has been difficult, describe what happened rather than simply calling your puppy nervous.
Ask which appointment is suitable and what records the team currently needs. Your veterinarian can advise when professional grooming fits your puppy’s health and vaccination plan. This guide does not set a universal first-groom age or replace individual veterinary advice.
Decide what you want from the first visit
Are you looking for a clean coat, help with tangles, a tidy-up, or an introduction to the grooming routine? Explain those priorities before choosing a service. The team can discuss the appropriate dog-grooming package and what may be practical for your puppy.
A full haircut is not automatically the right first goal. Some puppies need a simpler plan or a change of pace. A private appointment avoids a shared waiting room, but it does not guarantee that every puppy will be comfortable with every part of grooming.
Your booking checklist
- Age, current weight, breed or mix, and a recent coat photograph.
- Previous grooming experience and any handling concerns.
- Relevant health information and veterinary instructions.
- The service or result you would like to discuss.
- Your full address, proposed parking location, and contact number.
- Who will meet the groomer and collect your puppy afterward.
Prepare gently at home
Keep introductions to brushing and gentle handling short and positive. Ask the groomer to show you a suitable brush and technique. Pause if your puppy becomes distressed; do not force a session to continue. VCA’s puppy hygiene guidance explains gradual introductions to grooming and handling.
For more preparation ideas, see our guide to grooming and handling confidence. Share persistent difficulties with the team before the appointment so a suitable plan can be discussed.
Plan the arrival and handoff
The appointment takes place inside our self-contained mobile salon. You do not need to provide a hose or electrical outlet. You do need suitable vehicle access and a secure handoff. For a shared building, discuss parking permission and where you will meet the groomer in advance.
Owners generally stay outside the van during grooming; the groomer will explain any exception needed for your pet. Keep your contact details current and arrange to be available for the return. Tell the team about a time constraint before confirming the visit.
Ask what to do between visits
Afterward, ask which parts of the routine went well, what home brushing would help, and when to discuss another appointment. The right interval depends on the coat and the individual puppy—not a single timetable for every dog.
